Start Your Digital Nomad Life
It hit me recently that many remote workers are eager to move to a new country for a better life abroad but aren’t sure where to begin. From my experience living abroad, I’ve realized that no amount of research can fully prepare you for what life will actually be like.
Rather than spending endless time debating different options, I’m going to share the top affordable destinations for next month.
Why focus on next month? To help you overcome the decision-making paralysis.
In 2020, my family went from an idea to living on the stunning beaches of the Dominican Republic in under two months. Our quality of life has drastically improved compared to our time in the U.S. Now, ten countries and nearly four years later, I’m more convinced than ever that we made the best decision.
Best Place to Live in the World as a Digital Nomad
You deserve a better life abroad and a better quality of life. Many Americans hesitate to believe that moving to a different country could be the solution.
If you're under 30, the U.S. ranks 62nd on the World Happiness Report. For those over 60, it's ranked 10th among the happiest countries. That’s a huge gap.
Older generations seem content with the status quo in America, while younger people feel stuck and unhappy.
According to the latest data, no African country ranks above the U.S. in happiness. But I firmly believe Africa is home to some incredible places that shouldn't be overlooked. That’s why I’ve included countries with strong human development scores in my recommendations.
A Quick Heads Up
based on wi-fi speed—outdated, right? Almost every Marriott has solid internet, so unless you’re doing more than conference calls, you’ll be fine.
You’ll also notice certain factors that may not matter to you. For instance, if you don’t have kids, a top-notch education system won't be relevant.
Don’t get too caught up in lists that prioritize the cheapest places to stay. Yes, there are cheaper spots than the ones I recommend, but they often come with issues. Many lists focus on shared hostels, questionable hotels, or even couch surfing. That’s not how I travel, and my recommendations are for hotels I’d feel comfortable staying at with my family.
How I Pick the Best Countries to Live In
For most people, cost is the biggest factor when choosing their first digital nomad spot. A lower cost of living helps build the confidence to actually make the move and explore different countries.
I also consider access to beautiful surroundings and top tourist spots. None of my recommendations are airport hotels. A key assumption I make is that if there’s a Marriott property nearby, you’ll generally be safe and have reliable internet.
So, without further delay, here are the best places for affordable housing as a digital nomad in November 2024.
North America
Only 46% of Americans have a valid U.S. passport. Many digital nomad are technically location independent without ever leaving the land of opportunity. I am breaking down the North American category into two sections.
People without a passport can consider options within the United States while those with a valid passport can look at the best countries to live in worldwide.
United States
My overall recommendation for best digital nomad destination in November 2024 within the United States is Denver.
Denver has long been known for its outdoor lifestyle, but these days it’s also a hub for foodies and culture lovers.
If you love nature, don’t miss out on a hike up Red Rocks or a stroll around the stunning Denver Botanic Gardens. For art enthusiasts, the Denver Art Museum is a must-see, and if you're into history, take a tour of the Molly Brown House. Of course, no trip to Denver is complete without exploring the city's booming food scene and breweries.
You can stay at the Sheraton Denver for $73 per night.
The absolute cheapest place to stay within the United States in November 2024, head to Oklahoma City.
I decided to include an even cheaper option for those that are looking to just put their head down and work this summer. Oklahoma is not what you'd consider a digital nomad dream destination, but it is cheap.
You can stay at the TownPlace Suites Wichita East for the low price of $68 per night.
Top Country in North America for Digital Nomads
The top pick for North America is Mexico! Ranked 22nd on the World Happiness Report for those under 30, it’s hard to beat.
Many remote workers and solopreneurs like staying in the same time zone as the U.S., and Mexico is one of the best options for nomads or expats looking to settle long term.
A close friend of mine moved there with her family four years ago, and they absolutely love it! With the right paperwork, entrepreneurs can even secure permanent residency and enjoy those stunning white sandy beaches for as long as they want.
Stay at the Four Points Puebla for only $47 per night.
South America
Ecuador ranks as the best country for digital nomads in South America next month.
One fun fact about Ecuador: it's the closest country to space! Due to its location on the equator and the Earth's equatorial bulge, the peak of Mount Chimborazo is the farthest point from the Earth's center, even farther than Mount Everest. Additionally, Ecuador is one of the few countries in South America that uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency.
You can sleep at the Courtyard Guayaquil for about $71 per night.
Best European Countries to Live in for Digital Nomads
One of the biggest perks of heading to Europe is how easy and affordable it is to explore the entire continent. You could start in Germany and gradually move to other countries as accommodation prices shift.
Europe is famous for its budget-friendly travel options. Whether you take a train or a quick flight, getting around European nations can cost less than what you’d pay for a dinner out in New York.
Your first stop in November 2024 can be Bulgaria at the Four Points by Sheraton Bansko for around $65.36 nightly.
Africa
One of the most popular destinations in Africa for digital nomads is South Africa.
A company I contract for used to have offices in South Africa and employees would always fight over who got to go visit that location. From what I hear it's paradise.
Luckily, in November 2024 you can stay at the majestic Protea Hotel Harrismith Montrose and only pay about $46.28 per a night.
Best Countries to Live in Asia
November is actually one of the best times to visit Saudi Arabia. The temperatures are mild, making it perfect for exploring the rich history and stunning landscapes without the intense heat of the summer months.
This is also a great time to experience Saudi Arabia's famous festivals and cultural events. Riyadh Season, for example, kicks off in November, offering everything from live entertainment to art installations and food markets.
With the cooler weather, you can comfortably visit iconic sites like the ancient city of Al-Ula or take a desert safari. Plus, hotels and accommodations often offer great deals during this time, making it an affordable yet memorable adventure.
Enjoy the clock tower views at the Le Meridien Towers Makkah for just $64.50 per night.
Oceania
On the highest end of the budget you can head to Australia. This is our highest ranking country from the under 30-year-old world happiness report, coming in at number 19.
There's no smoking deals in the land down under for November. But, a long-term stay discount can reduce your costs dramatically.
Directly the heart of Melbourne you can stay at the Element Melbourne Richmond for $102.14 per night.
