We have just crossed the 2 year mark since my brother passed away.

It still doesn't feel real.
.
My mom made his favorite dinner. We had a pikachu ice cream cake.
.
There were lots of tears.
.
Every day I think of how much my brother would have loved Tokyo if only we could have gotten here before the tragedy.
.
I imagine what his job would have been and how he would be cheering for the girls at every performance.
.
My brother is deeply missed every single day.

Screen time has really exploded from a novelty into a full-on life ruining pastime.

So much emphasis gets put on limiting screen time for children. Meanwhile the length of time adults spend on their phone has skyrocketed.

When kids look to their parents for approval or acknowledgment, they are looking at the tops of your head. If your kid comes in for a snuggle they feel your phone press against their back.
.
Your employer doesn’t get the best version of you because of digital distraction. And even worse, your partner doesn’t get the best version of you as you scroll on your phone instead of connecting with them.
.
Digital decluttering and digital minimalism are long overdue for most adults.
.
Can you say with a straight face that scrolling 64.5 days per year gave you more value than quality time with people you love?

We notice such a dramatic difference in behavior during eras where the kids are too busy to be on screens.

For us, too busy is more about playing than rigorous academic work. At the end of the day they used to be so worn out that screens didn't even cross their minds.

Knowing how long the average adult wastes on screens is bad enough. Our kids don't have to fall into the same online time sucks that we did.

This wild child has just finished her 9th birthday here in Tokyo. My little ball of empathy and love has been through such a roller coaster life.

She was only 5 when the world shut down. Now she's visited, long term stayed, and even lived in 13 countries.

Charleigh is our comic relief in awkward situations. She bursts into random dance parties and uses randomly sprinkled advanced vocabulary.

Daddy and I knew you were the missing piece to our family puzzle the moment we met you. Happy birthday Charleigh!

It feels so weird to be vulnerable on the internet. But, it’s really hard to show up authenticity without revealing this side of myself.

My baby brother died in May of 2021.
.
For a long time after it didn’t feel weird letting people know I was struggling. Everyone expected me to be a mess.
.
But, now it’s been almost two years and it feels awkward to admit my continued struggle. I feel like people expect me to be more healed than I am. Maybe I expected me to be more healed at some point.
.
Life just feels so wrong and out of whack. This is not how it was supposed to go.
.
I know that my constant need for a new location and not associating with my old life is a massive defense mechanism. Running away from everything that reminds me of him and burying myself in new challenges keeps me from breaking down daily.

Why are you always waiting to do things? You are waiting for the perfect situation to just fall in their lap, instead of creating the perfect situation.

Stuck people see the portrayals of success and it's made to look so effortless. People think action requires fearlessness.

This couldn't be further from the truth. Action is not predicated by not being scared. You can not understand anything, not know the outcome, and not even be sure how to start, yet you take action.

There is a reason life feels like it's going by so incredibly fast. It's because of how your memories are stored.

Unique and new experiences are stored in individual folders. Mundane routine experiences are stored in a group folder.

For a normal person who looks back on their year, the vast majority of their life is routine unmemorable moments. Highlights from the year stand out, but the rest is just a blur of monotony.

Some amount of routine is unavoidable. Each day we must brush our teeth, bathe, eat, and sleep. But, how you fill your time is a choice.

We do our best to fill as many moments with memorable stories. Let your kids be the reason you live an epic life, not your excuse as to why you can't.
